2020 TANK Art Festival

The upcoming 2020 Tank Art Festival will be distinguishably different from the one held at Tank Shanghai last year which was a multi-disciplinary festival that includes the events ranging from art fair, books exhibition, to live music and flea markets. This year, the focus will be put on featuring not only the artworks brought by the artists, galleries, and institutions, but also the specific booths in which the artistic practices will be spatialized and presented.

In face of such a globalized crisis like the Covid-19, the very function of art remerges as a worth thinking question. As the pandemic sets forth a revaluation of the spatiotemporal that we human beings are now positioned, the art-world is also stepping into an unknown stage which is no less chaotic than the former. The upcoming Tank Art Festival will precisely be the space where we could somehow find a way to redefine this new era. Through the course of the event, the visitors are encouraged to not simply observe the complexity that lies in the trajectory of art-creation, but, more importantly, to build up close connections with the artists. It is the participant’s embodied experience that will be brought into intimate dialogues with the artworks that the Tank Shanghai will be presenting.

The 2020 Tank Art Festival will be divided into four sections, namely, “Art Specialists Clinic”, “Thirty-Six Rooms”, “More, More, More Group Exhibition”, and the “VR Exhibition of the Munich Beer Festival”.

Art Specialists Clinic

As a special program that Tank Shanghai is launching this year, the “Art Specialists Clinic” will invite a broad range of established professionals working in the field of contemporary art in China today to hold face-to-face conversations with the visitors. Their available appointment time will be from 14:00 to 18:00, October 3-6. Among them are the multi-disciplinary artists, gallery owners, curators, and art collectors. This program is borne out of their very means to reflect upon the art world in the age of post-pandemic. As the organizer, the Tank Shanghai believes that it is only by providing this channel through which the visitors could intimately communicate with those professionals that the seemingly temporal gap that this globalized crisis has left us with could be bridged.
