ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
PRESS KIT
TANK Shanghai is honored to announce the solo exhibition “Looking Out” by Xiao Jiang. The exhibition will open on November 11, 2025, and remain on view through February 8, 2026.
Landscape has long been a central thread in Xiao Jiang’s practice. This exhibition extends that thread through a selection of his outdoor paintings. The title Looking Out echoes a phrase that often returns to the artist while he works: “The one who looks out at the scenery.”In this body of work, “looking out” becomes the hinge between figure and landscape—between what lies within the frame and what extends beyond it.
Several works were made during his stay in the United States earlier this year. Compared with earlier distilled mountain scenes shaped from memory and photographs, these landscapes are more specific and immediate, carrying the sensibility of being in nature. For Xiao, they recall a late-afternoon ascent: moving from a city’s edge up toward a summit as daylight slips into dusk, wind, light, and terrain shifting in and out of view. Each canvas settles a moment of looking outward—an experience one can revisit.
In the galleries, viewers stand as if shoulder-to-shoulder with the figures in the paintings, sharing a gaze into the distance. Outer scenery and inner state meet in the same instant—everywhere becomes landscape.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Xiao Jiang
Xiao Jiang (b. 1977, Jinggangshan, China) creates atmospheric oil paintings of landscapes, figures, and interiors that combine elements of Western and Chinese art histories into compositions that are at once detached and emotive. He draws his subjects from photographs of his daily routine, his imagination, and his memories, composing works that are both extensions of and reflections on his experience of childhood in a rural mountain community and his current life in China’s second-largest city. Xiao’s signature textured surfaces result from his use of heavily-woven burlap as a substrate for his oils. Visual elements are pared down to flat planes of color, barely modulated and stripped of fine detail. Xiao lives in Shanghai.
Recent solo exhibitions include Karma, Los Angeles (2025); López de la Serna Centro de Arte Contemporáneo, Madrid (2023–2024); Karma, New York (2022); Platform China, Beijing (2021); Vanguard Gallery, Shanghai (2021, 2018); and LEO Gallery, Hong Kong (2020). His work is held in the collections of the Aïshti Foundation, Beirut; Dallas Museum of Art; and the EMDASH Foundation, Berlin, among others.
